What Materials Are Used For Shaft Retaining Rings

Jan 14, 2026

A shaft retaining ring is an elastic fastener installed in a shaft groove, primarily used to prevent components on the shaft (such as bearings, gears, etc.) from moving axially or becoming loose or falling off, thereby achieving axial positioning.

Axial positioning: By matching its elastic structure with a pre-machined groove on the shaft, it restricts the movement of components installed on the shaft along the axis.

Preventing axial movement: In mechanical equipment (such as hydraulic systems and pneumatic systems), it ensures that parts like bearings remain in the correct position and prevents equipment malfunctions caused by axial displacement.

Shaft retaining rings are generally suitable only for situations with no or minimal axial load. If a larger axial force needs to be resisted, other fixation methods such as round nuts or snap rings should be used.
